2 weeks

Over the summer i have been asked many times if im excited or scared for college.  Hopefully you are excited i mean thats a given but scared, well that can go both ways.  I leave in 20 days for college.  I have begun packing and yes, i am excited.

Im excited to finally have my own independence.  To not have to be told to do this and that but to be able to do this and that on my own.  Im excited for the saturday night parties and the college sports team games.  i am also excited for the equestrian aspect.  Yes, i will study, yes i will go to class but i still want to have fun doing it.

I am scared because im going  into something im not familiar with.  Yes i will have independence but i won't have someone their looking over my shoulder to tell me what to do which is a good and bad thing.  I also realized that i had experienced my last NEw England winter my senior year of high school.  Since i will only be home for winter break and spring break i won' t be getting the full winter that im use to.

It is all scary and exciting at the same time.  WHat can i say im full of mixed emotions.

COLLEGE

college- an institution of higher learning, esp. one providing a general or liberal arts education rather than technical or professional training.
Urban Dictionary Definition(s)- 1. A magical place where it is rumored that learning takes place, although to those who enter it is often described differently afterward, as a beatiful land in which beer flows in amber currents next to a golden pasture, where virgins lie naked with gentle smiles upon their calm, inviting faces; but more precisely, a Shangri-La rite of passage into adulthood which involves rampant consumption of alcoholic beverages, flagrant and promiscuous sexual behavior, and a general and fundamental disregard for any form of responsibility by its habitants.
2. the place where you enter inexorbitant amounts of debt to "learn" things you will never apply once to your actual occupation. Basically, an expensive 4-year waiting period for a paper called "degree".
3. an expensive daycare center
4. a place to get drunk, have sex, and then start all over again. Oh by the way it's a place to get an edukacion...i mean edukation... shit education, there we go
5. An alternative to buying a Ferrari (they cost about the same).

So yesterday i discovered the trials and tribulations of shopping for college.  we bought a microwave and fridge but once home discovered that I didn't need a microwave becasue their was one in the common room.  Then the fridge was 3.9 Cu Ft and you only can have one 2.7 cu or less.  So after returning those appliances we got a 2.5 Cu fridge from best buy.  http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=9215075&type=product&id=1218060230472

As we shopped at Target we discovered how much fun and stress was involved in shopping for college.  Accompanying me was my mom, who hates shopping in superstores; and my 22 year old sister who just graduated from college so was an expert in the field of college/ dorm shopping.

the one good thing about having a older sister who went through college is that she already bought most of the basic stuff you use for college.  Like lamps and fans.  She already owned a multi stemmed lamp and a large standing fan.   She also had a mini ironing board and some storage containers for clothes, etc.

The things i did miss were laundry detergent,  bath soap, shaving cream, and an umbrella.  I am buying most of my school supplies separately.  So tomorrow im going clothing shopping which is always fun.

Oh the trama

I woke yesterday to our goat Samson bleeding from his head and one of his horns hanging from its nerve ends.  I brought him to the barn and thought i could just pull it off.  Well a common fact in animals is that they don't show pain.  So when you go to grab the horn and Samson rears up and starts screaming with blood pouring down your face you kinda figure he is in huge amounts of pain.

So i called our regular vet who then gave me the number off a vet who specializes in goats.  She had two emergency calls before me so she didn't get out till 4.   So for the 6 hours that samson had to wait i gave him some bute and closed up the barn so that he could stay calm.  I didn't want to get him anxious because then his blood would be pumping and since the blood vessels in his horn where not seared he could loose more blood.

Once the vet got there we sedated him and she cleaned the area then seared his blood vessels which if you have ever been in a barn where a horse is getting hot shod take that smell and multiply it by five.  Then the vet chopped off half of his other horn and a reversal from the sedation.

When Samson began to wake up it was so funny because he looked like some guy who was high.  That dazed look and kinda look that says what the hell am i doing here?

Today i began to organize a list for stuff to get for college. I got a e-mail from housing that my roommate had been switched which was weird but it looks like it will work out.  We have alot in common, So i went to Target online and now i am wishlisting (is that a word) for college.  I estimate that i wont go over $300.  lets pray.

Rainy Days

Today was the most useless, pointless day i e had all summer.  It rained so i couldn't go riding.  Im kinda broke(saving for college so i put myself on a budget) so i couldn't go shopping.  So basically I woke up and surfed the web for a couple of hours.  I have become obsessed with the Wizards of Waverly Place and can't stop watching it.  After some relaxing hours of this i went downstairs and had some delicious Honey Nut Oatmeal.  Then came back upstairs and painted the background to my painting I'm working on. Photo in link: http://static.panoramio.com/photos/original/3747375.jpg
I now hate making sunsets with acrylics once you lay the paint down and it dries its not like watercolors where you can put some water on it and mix the colors more.  When Acrylic dries you had better hope thats what you want it to looks like.  So now im discovering the joys of mixing to make orange and totally making it look like shit.  Oh well so far from what i can tell this will be one of my better pieces so lets hope i finish it before i leave for school.

All this painting is practice for my 2-d art class where i will have to paint realism 2-D paintings. I am a abstract person so realism is not any walk in the park.

After working on some paintings i went out to feed the horses which was uneventful.  Then came home ate some awesome Pizza bagels...delicious.  Now the most eventful thing i did today that needed brain power was helping my sister pick out heels and why her dress needed a stomach belt.  so thats my rainy day tomorrow i get to babysit from 8-5 with a 7 year old who is horse obsessed.  I hope to god it doesn't rain!

Its starting to kick in

Im starting to realize that this is it.  My last free summer.

Lily and Moonshine are over there respiratory problem so they have been mixed with Brady and may be put with the mini donkeys today.  Tequila is officely starting retirement.  I will have to try riding him when i come back for winter break in  December.  Lightning still is not doing well at barrels.  He does fine turning without them but then when we try to run the pattern he forgets what we had practiced. UGH!

I'm excited for college and i am so happy that i have a sister who already went because now i don't have to buy new linens and half the other dorm stuff you have to get when you go to college.  I got my rider placement time it August 20Th at 2:00PM!  oh excited!

Rider placement is to see what group to put you in for your lessons.  Im riding Western and i have a feeling i am Novice.  I have more experience than a novice its just that i haven't gotten any points in shows because i ride gaited horses.  To be at the highest level which is reining you have to be a qualifier for AQHA Worlds.

Ruby is doing amazing.  Im guessing that because she is so good she was sent to auction because of financial problems.  Someone was training her for reining because she can turn on a dime and do a sliding stop which i discovered quickly when working on her short stride canter.  She is a sweetheart though and since Tequila is retired we need another horse to pick up his workload.

I am typing to you via laptop

I am typing this on my new Macbook Pro! I got it yesterday in Providence at the mac store.  i also got a free 8G Ipod touch! i guess when you buy a macbook you get a touch.  There are so many features on the mac book its so cool.  Though my touch is a little The  more cool because you can add all these free apps I'm sure i will learn to love the pro once school starts.  After we got the laptop we went down to the Fire and Ice restaurant.  There are only 6 in the country and i totally wish there were more.  The restaurant is set up like a cafeteria.  what you do is grab a bowl then buffet style choose all the ingredients you want in your meal.  They have vegetables, fruits, and meats.  You also get to choose a sauce top top it.  It is about $14 for a all you can eat  special.  my first choice was a a hamburger with pineapple and Honey Garlic Sauce.  It was amazing.  then after scarfing that down i went up for seconds and got a bacon, sirloin, and beef cuts dish with baby cabbage and pineapple as well as rosemary basil potato's.  this was topped with Caribbean Jerk sauce which was excellent with the pineapple because it then had a sweet and spicy flavor to it.  So if you are ever in providence, or Boston find a fire and ice because you won't regret it!

Tomorrow i have work at the Mystic Shipyard where i work in the office.  I'm planning on bringing my laptop because supposedly  the whole place has WI-fi and the last few times I've been at work my boss has locked her computer.  I guess she thinks i am going to put some massive virus in her hardrive and ruin her computer.  hell i don't even no how to plant a virus let alone make one so locking her computer shouldn't;t be such a big problem but oh well.  Ill just bring my super awesome macbook pro and keep my self very entertained.

plus being payed very well to answer calls and help incoming transients out is very easy so i have alot of time on my hands and i need to write a 500-600 word essay and the book serena.  so i can do that tomorrow seeing as i read the book while at work in 1 1/2 days .  Well thats all for now school starts soon so I can look forward to that. plus im going with my sister and friends to see Kenny Chesney so that should be fun.

More rescues

so two weeks ago we rescued a haflinger X TWH mare. She is super sweet great and will be a awsome trail horse. Then my mother decides that we can take these two Donkeys that were in the kill pens about to go on there 24 hour trailer ride to mexico to end up on the plates of some french aristocrat over in Europe. These Donkeys are a Mare and Filly. The mom or Jennet can be seen in this video below.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tiTW2C2Bkfo

As you can see she is walking on her heels and the person who hauled her said she has severe laminitis. So the hauler said she would arrive at 9:00PM well 9:00PM turned into 1:00AM. So i pulled a all-nighter and we prepared to transfer the horses from the haulers trailer to ours becasue the moms laminitis was so bad she couldn't walk up our driveway.

The filly who was "Wild" was asleep when we went to transfer so we were able to get a halter on her. We then backed the trailers up to each other and our trailer has a swing out door so we were able to use that as a wall so the horses didn't run off. On the other side was our volunteers very nice all leather mazda convertible. So we transfered the donkeys. from one trailer to the other pretty eaisly.

We got them to the barn and settled and the mom who already had a name "Lily" and the baby which we didn't. Before we left i said isn't she precious so we thought "precious" would be a sutible name. The next day or should i say later that morning the vet came by. Before he got there though i went out and chatted with the volunteers and discovered that "precious" had relaxed. If you are a horse savvy person then relaxed means that in male horses they dropped there penis and had relaxed. Well this came as a shock seeing as Precious was suppose to be a girl. after dispute and feeling around it was definite that Precious was in fact a boy.

So the vet came and palpated Lily who was not pregnet luckily. Lily did have a fever of 104( normal is 99- to 100) he also diagnosed that she had a upper respitory virus which is why she was coughing. He then gave her a B12 shot and a antibiotic. we also have to dissolve her antibiotic and inject it into her mouth twice a day. now that was fun! the vet also said her lamanitis didn't seem to severe and that she was walking better. so now all we have to do is nurse her and her "colt" back to health.

on another note i got my roomate she is a sophomore transfer student. Also majoring in equine but in theraputic.

life is good on the kent farm. one rescue ata time.
